Review: Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson

Paperback: 320 pages
Release date: August 5th, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster UK

Goodreads Summary: 17-year-old Lila has two secrets she's prepared to take to the grave. The first is that she can move things just by looking at them. The second is that she's been in love with her brother's best friend, Alex, since forever. After a mugging exposes her unique ability, Lila decides to run to the only people she can trust - her brother and Alex. They live in Southern California where they work for a secret organisation called The Unit, and Lila discovers that the two of them are hunting down the men who murdered her mother five years before. And that they've found them. In a world where nothing and no one is quite as they seem, Lila quickly realises that she is not alone - there are others out there just like her - people with special powers -and her mother's killer is one of them…

This is the first book by Sarah Alderson that I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last one. Hunting Lila turns out to be one of the best books I’ve finished so far this year. This book managed to suck me in right from the beginning ‘til the end. I don’t give 5 stars lightly and this 2011 debut novel deserves it and more… because it completely blew me away.

Hunting Lila has it all: tons of heart-pounding action, toe-curling romance and a fast moving plot. I guessed one right thing from the beginning, but felt so astonished when oodles of mysteries were revealed. I also tend to feel bored to tears sometimes when I read action in books. But in this case, that never happened to me. The pace kept throughout the story and never once did I put it down. The writing was amazing and the plot was well-built. This book easily falls into my favorite reads list.

I think I can go on and on about how remarkable the characters in this story were. They are absolutely my favorite thing about this book! Lila was such an enjoyable and fun character. She can be stubborn at times but she’s also strong-willed and loyal to everyone she loves. And then there’s my favorite character: Alex. Because alright, any girl would be undeniably inlove with him even if he wasn’t real. Aside from the fact that he’s soooo swoonworthy, he’s also downright nice and sweet. He knows the right things to do, even if doing these things went against many things he’s taught to believe in. Seriously, what’s up with Alexes in YA? I am not complaining because all of them are awesome, and so far I think this is my favorite Alex.

The story, although not as new, has its own twists that left my heart pounding! It was so fabulously written it was insanely impossible to put it down. Hunting Lila was an electrifying debut I could easily reread. It’s a must-read for every YA fans out there and Sarah Alderson is an author to keep an eye out for. I’m craving and dying for Losing Lila!

  1. Wow! What a great and heartfelt review. I don't give 5 stars lightly either.
High praise from you. Seems like there's no way I won't enjoy this book :-) The cover is gorgeous, too. Don't think I've ever read a "my brother's best friend" PNR theme.
