Siren's Fury by Mary Weber + Giveaway

by Mary Weber
Contrary to the popular belief of my children . . . sometimes my husband and I are cool enough that we get invited to parties.

(Either that or the party hosts just think this poor couple needs help at socialization with real live people and thus they send us an invite. In which case, it clearly seems to be effective since, at these parties, we end up visiting and laughing and do in fact generally act like humans who know what they’re doing.)

And sometimes, at said parties, we meet nice people who say lots of lovely things about life. And we say lovely things too. :0)

And every so randomly-often these newly-met nice people also say kind things like, “Oh hey, I read your book.”

Confession: This is always followed by a moment of silence. Until after a moment I coolly fumble out the words, “Oh. You did? Why?” (because I apparently need to be as awkward as possible and ask why on earth someone would do such a thing.)

“Ummmm because you wrote it.”
Me: “Oh.”
Nice Person: “And I really enjoyed your fantasy world. Especially the powers and man-eating horses.”
Me: *smiles sheepish* “Awww thanks.”
Nice Person: “So how’d you come up with the ideas for those?”
Me: “………...” *mind goes blank*

It’s usually not until handsome husband and I are driving home that my brain suddenly kicks back on and I think, “Why didn’t I tell them the truth?”

The truth being that sometimes I can be a decent collector of ideas.

Ideas resulting from being raised on Lord of the Rings and medieval history books.

And the massive love affair I have with all things Avatar, The Last Airbender.

As well as Maggie Stiefvater.

Along with Hayao Miyazaki

And comics.

In fact that last one I enjoy so much, I married one of the characters.

#wolverine

So… for the next time any of you feel inclined to pity us poor nerds and invite us to your super cool party to hang out with your super nice friends – WE ACCEPT!!!

And if one of those nice friends happens to ask about the world of Siren’s Fury . . .

Those will be my answers. ;0)

Siren's Fury (Storm Siren, #2)
Siren's Fury
by Mary Weber
Publisher: Thomas Nelson/Harpercollins
Release Date: June 2nd, 2015
Blurb: "I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it's no use. The curse I've spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists."

Nym has saved Faelen only to discover that Draewulf stole everything she valued. Now he’s destroyed her Elemental storm-summoning ability as well.

When Nym sneaks off with a host of delegates to Bron, Lord Myles offers her the chance for a new kind of power and the whispered hope that it may do more than simply defeat the monster she loathes. But the secrets the Bron people have kept concealed, along with the horrors Draewulf has developed, may require more than simply
harnessing a darker ability.

They may require who she is.

Set against the stark metallic backdrop of the Bron kingdom, Nym is faced with the chance to change the future.

Mary Weber is a ridiculously uncoordinated girl plotting to take over make-believe worlds through books, handstands, and imaginary throwing knives. In her spare time, she feeds unicorns, sings 80’s hairband songs to her three muggle children, and ogles her husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking L.A. bands, Joss Whedon, and the ocean. Her debut YA fantasy novel, STORM SIREN, is available now in bookstores and online, and SIREN'S FURY (book 2 in the trilogy) will be out June, 2015 from TN HarperCollins.

Waiting on Wednesday: Red Queen and An Ember in the Ashes

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Here are my WoW picks this week (click on the title for the Goodreads page):

Red Queen
Release date: March 26th, 2015
Publisher: Orion
Pre-Order: The Book Depository | B&N | Amazon
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own—an ability she didn't know she had. Except . . . her blood is Red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard—the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince—and Mare against her own heart.

From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart and the only certainty is betrayal.

This sounds so bloody awesome and I love the simple but eye-catching cover. It's officially one of my most anticipated 2015 debuts.

An Ember in the Ashes
Release date: April 28th, 2014
Publisher: Razorbill
Pre-Order: The Book Depository | Amazon
Set in a terrifyingly brutal Rome-like world, An Ember in the Ashes is an epic fantasy debut about an orphan fighting for her family and a soldier fighting for his freedom. It’s a story that’s literally burning to be told.

LAIA is a Scholar living under the iron-fisted rule of the Martial Empire. When her brother is arrested for treason, Laia goes undercover as a slave at the empire’s greatest military academy in exchange for assistance from rebel Scholars who claim that they will help to save her brother from execution.

ELIAS is the academy’s finest soldier— and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias is considering deserting the military, but before he can, he’s ordered to participate in a ruthless contest to choose the next Martial emperor.

When Laia and Elias’s paths cross at the academy, they find that their destinies are more intertwined than either could have imagined and that their choices will change the future of the empire itself.

Vow your blood and body to the empire.

Keep your heart for yourself.
The early reactions for this book are overwhelmingly positive and I can totally see why. With a summary that promises action and adventure, who wouldn't like this? And did you know that Paramount already bought the rights to it?

Blog Tour: Goddess Born by Kari Edgren (with Excerpt and Giveaway)

Excerpt

Nathan leaned closer and I fought the urge to step back. “You are playing a dangerous game, Selah. Deny God’s will, and I shall request an official inquiry into that incident with Oliver Trumble. From what I heard the boy was near dead when you reached him.”

“Don’t be absurd,” I snapped. “He fell out of an apple tree and hit his head on a rock. Being knocked unconscious is a far cry from near dead.”

Nathan narrowed his eyes. “His older sister has a different story. She used the word miracle to describe what you did.”

“You are quite mistaken, Mr. Crowley. I can no more bring back the dead than you can.” I lifted my chin and forced a curt, derisive laugh. “Phoebe Trumble will say anything to get attention. I did nothing other than wait for Oliver to wake up before ministering to his scrapes and bruises.”

Nathan didn’t respond at once, and I thought the conversation over when he grabbed my arm, pulling me to him. “Be my wife, Selah Kilbrid, or I’ll have you charged for a witch.”

I tried to wrestle free, but he held tight. “Find one person who will stand against my father. Go ahead and cry witch. No one will believe you.”

“You foolish girl. Once your father dies, there is no one left to protect you. Even if you don’t hang, the wheat would rot in the fields from want of men willing to work for a suspected witch. Brighmor would be bankrupt within a year, two at most. Do you think your cousin would be so eager to honor your engagement under these altered circumstances?”

The initial shaking had spread far beyond my voice until I trembled from head to toe with suppressed fury. “Is this how you go about doing God’s work? By threatening to slander my name to force me into marriage?” Fight as I might, his grip remained steadfast on my arm. “Let me go!” Stomping down on his shiny black shoe, I dug my heel into the top of his foot. He grunted in pain, and I stumbled back a step, surprised by the sudden freedom.

Savage anger burned in Nathan’s eyes, turning his face an ugly shade of red. “I am prepared to do whatever it takes to have you for my wife. This Sunday we will stand and state our intentions to marry. Refuse and I’ll assume it’s because you’re a witch and unable to marry a man called of God.”

Despite my desire to say something more, like blasting him with every curse I had ever heard, my throat grew too tight for words. Silence pursued and he did not attempt to stop me a third time when I pushed by and started again toward home.

Author Bio
Kari Edgren did not dream of becoming a writer. Instead, she dreamed of everything else and was often made to stay inside during kindergarten recess to practice her letters. Despite doting parents and a decent school system, Ms. Edgren managed to make it through elementary school having completed only one book cover to cover – The Box Car Children, which she read approximately forty-seven times. Things improved during high school, but not until she read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in college, did she truly understand the power of a book.

Ms. Edgren aspires to be a Vulcan, a world-acclaimed opera singer, and two inches taller. She resides in the Pacific NW where she spends a great deal of time torturing her husband and children with strange food and random historical facts. Ms. Edgren hasn’t stopped dreaming, but has finally mastered her letters enough to put the stories on paper.
