Review: Aspen by Rebekah Crane + Giveaway!

Publisher: In This Together Media
Release Date: June 5th 2014
Blurb:
One quiet night in Boulder, Colorado, Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor made a mistake.

In the next instant, her life changed forever.

Aspen doesn't want to remember the car accident that killed Katelyn Ryan, a sleek-haired popular soccer player. But forgetting is hard-- because Katelyn may have died -- but she didn't leave. Her ghost is following Aspen around, and heading into senior year, it's kind of a problem. Especially when Katelyn's former boyfriend Ben appears to be the only person at school with a clue as to how Aspen feels.

Popularity, Homecoming Court, hot guys - none of these things ever mattered to Aspen. She's been busy trying to keep her stoner mother Ninny in line and out of unemployment. But with Ben sitting next to her in Physics and her therapist begging her to remember all the things she wants to forget, Aspen is thrust into a vivid, challenging world she can't control ... and doesn't want to.

A darkly funny, emotionally gripping story of opening up, letting go, and moving on, Aspen is about the best-worst accident of your life ... and what comes next.

You can purchase Aspen at the following Retailers:

Having been in either Contemporary or Paranormal roll the last few months, it is a welcoming surprise to read something I don’t often come across in YA – a contemporary with a slight touch of Paranormal to spice up a rainy day. Throw in the mystery and the main character’s refreshing attitude and I’m hooked from the very start.

Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor is one heroine and narrator that I could seriously see myself being friends with had she been a real person. I love her name, her sarcastic and witty remarks and the honest voice she possessed throughout the story.  I love that I could sympathize with some of her struggles that befit a real teenager. For all those reasons, I had no trouble warming up and connecting to her character.

Despite her pretty unconventional upbringing  she was born at a rock concert when her mom, Ninny, was only 16  Aspen is a normal, artistically inclined teenager who finds comfort in definitions. Sure, she has her quirks but still, she's normal for the most part until that momentous day when the popular Katelyn Ryan's car crashed into her Volkswagen Rabbit. Katelyn died in the accident and her ghost literally began to haunt Aspen. Her school life also took an unexpected turn as her popularity soar. Add that to the friendship she and Ben, Katelyn's boyfriend, have surprisingly developed and you have a thoroughly entertaining and hearty read.
"It's kind of depressing, though, that we never really see ourselves." I say.
"Maybe life isn't about seeing ourselves. Maybe it's about letting other people see us."
You know what's better than an attractive, smart and kind love interest? A perceptive, attractive, smart and kind love interest. And Ben is all that. He's not characterized as perfect by any means. He's also flawed and troubled by Katelyn's death but he's true to himself and that's all that matters. One character who took me by surprise is Suzy, Katelyn's best friend and another popular sort. I was suspicious of her upbeat personality and intention to befriend Aspen at the beginning but Suzy turns out to be a loyal and terrific friend to her.

While the subject matter of this book could be serious and a little bit creepy at times, it's also hilarious and charming for the most part. I enjoyed the interactions between Aspen and Ninny and her best friends, Kim and Cass. I think if I could change a thing in this book, it would be to add more pages and fill it out with more Kim and Cass. They are that likable and entertaining.

All in all, Aspen is a great read with complex and real characters and filled to the brim with entertaining and genuine dialogues. I'd also like to point out that (as cliche as it may sound) while Aspen is the first Rebekah Crane book I've read, it most definitely will not be the last.

Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy.

But when gorgeous new girl Sofia rolls in and steals Brendan, Ashley's place on the team, and her fragile foothold on the Mansfield Park Prep social totem pole, it’s on. Sofia is everything Ashley left her old school to escape. The only thing Ashley didn’t count on is Sofia’s sexy twin brother Vincent.

Vincent is not only the hottest boy in school, he’s charming, sweet, and he’s got his eye on Ashley. He’s also not taking no for an answer. There's no real reason Ashley shouldn't like Vincent, but with the
battle lines being drawn between her and Sofia, Ashley’s not sure which side he’s on. Or which side she wants him to be on.

She does know Sofia is trouble with a capital T, and she’s determined to make Brendan see it.

SOLVING FOR EX is a YA contemporary romance that remixes Mansfield Park as Clueless meets Mean Girls in a crazy mix of high school society, mathletic competition, and teenage romance.

Review

Though this is not the first time I've heard Leigh Ann Kopans name in the blogosphere or on twitter, because I have friends who've read her books--One & Two--this is the first book I've read a book by her and  I must say it is a fresh and good start to know a author.

The whole idea of friendship turns into something more is one of my favorite concept in reading a book.  Ashley and Brendan relationship as a friend was showed thoroughly in the whole story. Leigh Ann built their relationship with right amount of justice that doesn’t interfere with forming a different relationship between them.
What makes me love this book more is the math, well not the Math, because I don’t think I would ever love that (hehe) but the little snippet of math letters between Vincent and Ashley, was cute.
The geekyness of Ashley and Brendan was also cute, the point of being smart and witty at the same time is right for them.  Vincent and Sofia was also not only a trouble, but they made the whole story more exciting. At some point I don’t know who Ashley would end up with because there’s Vincent, who’s perfect ;) and Brendan who I also really like for Ashley.

The ending of the whole story was good; I can’t say it was perfect because there are parts that I feel there should be more. And I felt that the conclusion of Ashley and Brendan feelings for each other were a bit hurried.

But all in all Solving For Ex is the right book for you if you’re into easy yet fun book to read. It will make you fall in love in the geekiest way ;)

“Amazing! If you like Sarah Dessen you will LOVE this.”
-          Emma Pass, author of Acid and The Fearless (Random House)

"Putting a modern spin on a Jane Austen classic, Solving for Ex proves that brains can be sexier than brawn. In this complicated equation of high school drama, mean girls, mathletics, and romance, LeighAnn delivers yet another beautifully written young adult novel that authentically captures teenage emotions while also capturing the reader's heart."
-          Nikki Godwin, author of Chasing Forever Down, American Girl on Saturn, and the upcoming Falling from the Sky

“Ashley is the kind of girl you want to root for, smart and capable and self-assured, despite of, or maybe because of, her vulnerabilities. And in Brenden, LeighAnn has crafted a boy worth of such a girl. Through all the heartbreak and angst of high school, their connection is undeniable and pressing. It's elementary, dear readers - Solving for Ex is one must-read romance.”
-          Jenny Kaczorowski, author of The Art of Falling (Bloomsbury 2013)

“If you only read one book in 2014, make sure it's Solving For Ex! I sincerely doubt that you'd regret reading it; it's intelligent, hilarious, intense and touching…Honestly one of the most amazing books I have ever read.”

Blog Tour: Review of Second to No One by Natalie Palmer

Second Kiss by Natalie Palmer
Release Date(Paperback): 2010
Publisher: Tate Publishing
Paperback: 237 pages
Blurb:
“Even my most humiliating moments seemed funny somehow when I told them to Jess.”

Gemma Mitchell is a normal girl who somehow gets herself into abnormally embarrassing circumstances. And while she thinks she's the biggest loser in school because of them, there are a few people in her life who would disagree. One of those people is her best friend, Jess Tyler, who is opposite to her in every way.

He's popular, good looking, athletic, and intelligent, and he can't get enough of Gemma. But while Gemma is dealing with problems like wrong locker combinations and Valentine's Day dances, Jess is living in a world of serious issues that are foreign to Gemma, until she realizes that he's holding on to her for dear life.

Humorous and true to life, Second Kiss is an entertaining saga about a boy and girl who find that their lives have a lot more meaning once they have shared them with each other.

“Things change. People change. Jess and I weren’t above it.”

Gemma’s first year of high school isn’t starting out the way she hoped. Jess is back from California and before she can memorize her class schedule their summer romance comes to a screeching halt. To add to her misery the gorgeous new girl in school also has eyes for Jess and despite Gemma’s unfailing attempts to win him back she keeps finding herself alone.

But when a late night car crash lands her a three month grounding and twenty hours of community service she discovers that there’s more to life than just romance and boyfriends.

Unpredictable and heart wrenching, Second to No One is the perfect continuation to the magical beginning of the Gemma and Jess romance.

Review
Second To No One is the sequel to Second Kiss by Natalie Palmer which I've read last year so I had to adjust first because I don't remember some of the things in the first book. But after a few pages I get to welcome Gemma's story again and I can say that it was a perfect sequel.

The plot is perfectly built with just a right amount of romance, a tear-jerker moment--yes there is one and I cried-- and an ending that will leave you wanting for the next book--and when I say want it means with a lot of WHAT?! and WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END?! *insert crying face* moment, which means there will be a third book and we get to see more of Jess and Gemma! Yay! I can really say that this book change what I've viewed on this series, there were no dull moments and will hooked you until the end.

There's also the characters. I like how Gemma grown into a woman, she get to stand on her own feet and fixed her relationship with her family and friends. The new characters Lauren, Tag and the old ones Drew and Trace also was a big part to make the whole story more interesting. The romance between Jess and Gemma that I'm hoping I will get after the ending in the first book didn't happen in this because of a little misunderstanding BUT this actually didn't bother me at all while reading the book. I think this just gives me more reason to wait for the third book.

To sum it up... I. LOVE. THE. BOOK. and to all the readers/bloggers out there who don't know who's Natalie Palmer or her books well what are you waiting for you lazy one, get moving and read this! ^_^

 Author Bio
I am a writer. But more importantly, I'm a mom, which is the best thing I could have ever hoped for in my life. I have three kids who amaze me every day with their little quips of humor and intelligence.  I can't really applaud myself for how great they are, though, since I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing when it comes to mothering children.  But the fact that they're turning out so awesome and I'm the one that hangs out with them all day makes me feel pretty good about myself.

I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah where I was spoiled to have the huge Wasatch Mountains in my backyard.  I graduated from the University of Utah with a major in English Literature but that's boring.  The exciting part was when I met and fell in love with the boy of my dreams. He wasn’t my first or second kiss but he was by far my favorite and it didn't take us long to figure out that life could never be as good apart as it was together. So we got married and have been living happily ever after ever since.

When I’m not attending to my homemaking and writing duties I love to exercise because it’s the only time that I have an excuse to listen to my music uninterrupted and as loud as I want.  I love all different genres of music but I run extra fast when I hear Dashboard Confessionals, Cold Play or Owl City on my iPod.  Besides music I love anything that has to do with water including but not limited to drinking it, skiing on it (in liquid or powder form), basking in the sun while boating on it and (these days) lazily dreaming while my kids play in it for hours on end.

So there you have it. I'm a wife, mother, writer and iPod blasting mermaid.  While my husband works his brains out I take care of our kids and conjure up storylines and characters and romantic turns of events.  And someday, if we're lucky, we'll be as happy as we are now.

Review: Afterparty by Ann Redisch Stampler

15751652
Genre: YA Contemporary
Paperback: 384  pages
Release Date: January 7th, 2014
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Purchase: Amazon | The Book Depository
Emma is tired of being good. Always the dutiful daughter to an overprotective father, she is the antithesis of her mother -- whose name her dad won't even say out loud. That's why meeting Siobhan is the best thing that ever happened to her...and the most dangerous. Because Siobhan is fun and alluring and experienced and lives on the edge. In other words, she's everything Emma is not.

And it may be more than Emma can handle.

Because as intoxicating as her secret life may be, when Emma begins to make her own decisions, Siobhan starts to unravel. It's more than just Dylan, the boy who comes between them. Their high-stakes pacts are spinning out of control. Elaborate lies become second nature. Loyalties and boundaries are blurred. And it all comes to a head at the infamous Afterparty, where debauchery rages and an intense, inescapable confrontation ends in a plummet from the rooftop...

This explosive, sexy, and harrowing follow-up to Ann Redisch Stampler's spectacular teen debut, Where It Began, reveals how those who know us best can hurt us most.

Thoughts

First things first, I would like to point out the beautiful cover. I usually remind myself not to judge a book by its cover and it wouldn’t hurt to say that the first thing that caught my attention was itWell, it’s the first thing that you will notice on a book so it must leave an impressionLook at the colors, the lights, and the silhouette of a girl in a dress carrying her shoes which gave an intriguing and fascinating feeling. It is exactly the kind of cover that best describes the title, Afterparty.

The story is divided into three parts and it was told from Emma’s point of view following her and Siobhan’s life (Emma’s newfound friend) in a private High School in California. Emma describes herself between two personalities, a Goody two shoes Emma and a bad Emma. Ha! It might a tad confusing but when you read the book she’s just as confuse on herself because while trying to be good for herself and for her Dad, whom she is afraid to disappoint, she also feels like a part of her is destined to become somebody like her Mom. Her Mom didn’t appear in the story but it is observable that she has a huge effect on Emma. Well, to give a summary of what her Mom did that made her father quite strict to her was her Mom’s addiction to vices (Drugs, Drinking, et al.) so her father is just trying his best for her not to wind up like her Mom although it would seem that on some level her father had been too strict. I don’t mean to say that he should have let her loose or anything like that but I think that because of it Emma learned to lie and she learned to keep secrets from her father. I don’t support Emma’s character in the book not because I hate her…Well, annoyed perhaps but not hate. I’m annoyed on her bad decisions, Yeah…nobody’s perfect but she keeps on coming back on the same mistakes because when she decides on a thing either she’s drunk or she’s emotionally unstable which ruffle my feathers though one thing I admire about her is her loyalty.

On the other hand we have Siobhan, a total opposite of Emma in all aspects. She’s carefree, wild, and unpredictable but she had become friends with her since the first day. She’s the person who made the prep Afterparty check list for her that contain debauchery that Emma wouldn’t imagine her father would let her do. I can’t say that she’s a completely bad friend because she had shown her good and bad side but there were times that when she fights Emma I don’t feel as if she were a real friend, friends fight but it doesn’t look like they’re fighting as friends. It was like she’s a new person and she’s trying to compete with her.  I hate her lies, her made up stories and the way she interferes on Emma’s life unaware or deliberately messing it up or just trying to fix it. I’m not a fan of Siobhan and she’s the type of person I wouldn’t mess with or have as a friend but beneath it all I know that drinking or doing drugs is just her way of coping up…a terrible and wrong path but who would tell her that when her mother is always away and she’s very secretive. A redeeming quality of her for me is keeping promises however her ability to keep promises may have been over the top that it became a bad thing too and it could’ve lead to death.

As for the romance in the story, if you are expecting a lot of swoon or cheesy scenes then I’m going to warn you that don’t expect too much on that department. There is romance; actually it is one of the problems that surfaced and it wasn’t instalove but ain’t the focus of the story. The book gives emphasis on Siobhan and Emma’s love and hate friendship. However, I assure you that Dylan Kahane is one hot guy that you wouldn’t wanna miss. Regarding its title, Afterparty, it fits the character and atmosphere of the book since it is all where it started and where should definitely end.

Afterparty is the story of two girls that is utterly different, two sides of the same coin, but has formed friendship despite their differences and it is despairing to see their friendship crumble into nothingness because of the string of lies and betrayals. Add to the mix the endless misunderstandings, mistakes, forgiveness, love and hate and you’ll have the type of book that is absolutely enticing and will keep you reading until you’ve read the conclusion. It is not the best read for me because I have my dull moments with this book too but not worst either so I’ll just stick with okay. This may not be the type of book for everyone but if you’re a contemporary reader looking for something fresh and YA (and if you aren’t afraid to hurl your copy across the room because some of the parts are so good therefore you are affected and hurt) then this book is definitely for you!

Afterparty is the first work of Ann Stampler I’ve read and I want to thank her for sending me an Advance Reader Copy of her book in exchange of honest review.
